Herbalife’s Preferred Members

The Herbalife website states that the company now has 400,000+ “Preferred Members.” This may be true, but the company doesn’t disclose where these members are located. They may all be in the US, for example. If they are all in the US, then Herbalife’s membership numbers are inflated. This is a big problem for Herbalife, because consumer research shows that people are more likely to use products they pay for.

Herbalife’s current business model is based on distributors and associates selling the products and recruiting other members to join their team. Herbalife pays its top earners based on their sales and recruiting. However, Herbalife also needs a large group of members who simply use the products for their personal consumption and are not interested in starting their own Herbalife business. Herbalife’s President, Des Walsh, explained this issue in the Q3 earnings call, when he stated:

All Herbalife members start as either Distributors or Associates, and only those who want to start their own Herbalife business should become Distributors or Associates. Anyone joining Herbalife for the first time must decide whether to become a Distributor or an Associate and enter into a written Herbalife Member Agreement and Application (formerly known as a Herbalife Independent Distributorship Agreement). The person will then be either a Distributor or a Preferred Member (wholesale customer).

The difference between Herbalife’s Distributors and Preferred Members is that only Distributors can sell Herbalife products to other people. A Distributor can also recruit other Distributors to join their team and can eventually earn commissions and bonuses based on the performance of their team. A Preferred Member cannot resell Herbalife products, but does have the option to upgrade and become a Distributor at any time.

To become a Herbalife Preferred Member, complete the online Herbalife Membership Application with your personal information and shipping address. Create a 4-8 character pin code and agree to the Herbalife Member Agreement. Then select the Member Pack and submit your order.
